Rain barrels around the home

One of the facts that we have to face up to as human beings is that we place a fairly heavy burden on the environment simply by existing. The earth's supply of resources is hardly inexhaustible, with water being one of those that are often in short supply. With all the water that each of us uses up on a daily basis, there is a very real threat that there may not be enough left for future generations. This is especially relevant since many parts of the world have to endure water shortages on a regular basis, and the problem is only bound to get a lot worse in the future. It is now more important than ever to take certain steps in order to conserve water as much as possible, and we can do our own small part by installing rain barrels.

The most basic function of rain barrels is to collect the water that comes from rain, which is useful for a lot of things in and around the home. From watering plants to washing windows, cleaning gardening tools and outdoor equipment and many more uses, rainwater is a tremendously valuable resource that we would do well to take advantage of. This water is particularly suited for the irrigation of outdoor plants and lawns, because it is after all coming from a natural source and is typically softer than the water that you can get from your tap.

There is a wide range of options to choose from with regard to rain barrels, with store bought models offering the convenience of added features such as faucet attachments and pipe fittings, and you can even make your own from commonly available and inexpensive materials. Either type of rain barrels will be adequate for the task of collecting water, with your choice being largely dependent on your planned usage. If you want to install rain barrels in an area of your property where there is no ready supply of water available from a mains source, a commercial model may be a better option since it will allow you to attach a garden hose easily. Some of these types of rain barrels will also keep the water from overflowing from the top and course it somewhere else.

For simple water collection needs, you may find that improvised rain barrels will be quite sufficient for your purposes. These can be fashioned from anything from plastic gallon jugs to barrels and even large capacity pails. These types of rain barrels are by far the more inexpensive option, and you can easily install one or more of them around your home for only a few dollars.
